Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of this team?

This team is made up of 4th year Civil Engineering Students from Lakehead university and we are using the opportunity of competing in the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition to complete our Degree Project.

How does Concrete Float?

It might sound impossible, but with the right design, concrete can float! Just like a steel ship, a concrete canoe stays afloat because of its shape and careful engineering. By creating a hull that displaces more water than the total weight of the canoe and its paddlers, the canoe achieves buoyancy. We also use lightweight aggregates and special mix designs that reduce the density of the concrete without compromising strength. The result: a concrete canoe that glides across the water!

Who can join the Team?

Any Lakehead University student with an interest in learning, building, and working as part of a team is welcome to join. While most of our members are civil engineering students, we encourage students from all years and disciplines to get involved. Whether you’re passionate about design, construction, fundraising, project management, or racing on competition day, there’s a place for you on the team. No prior experience is needed — just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Do I need experience to join?

Not at all! We welcome students of all skill levels. Whether you’re in your first year or finishing your degree, there are plenty of ways to contribute — from design and construction to project management, fundraising, and racing.

Is it just for civil engineering students?

The team is primarily civil engineering students, but we welcome anyone who is interested in learning and contributing. Students from other disciplines can get involved in areas like project management, marketing, graphic design, or paddling.

How is the team funded?

We rely on a mix of fundraising, sponsorships, and donations to cover the costs of materials, equipment, transportation, and competition fees. That’s why community and alumni support is so important to us.

Why is it called the “Amethyst Armada”?

Thunder Bay is home to the world’s largest amethyst deposit, and our 2026 team theme celebrates that local identity. The name “Amethyst Armada” reflects both our roots and our spirit of strength, unity, and resilience.
